I was listening to a great story on NPR radio that made me stop and think, what one word would our customers use to describe our business, Technology In A Box Learning Services? Of course, the next question on my mind was, what one word would I want them to use to describe us? Right? Several words came to mind, but it all relates back to the reason why we learned the importance of defining our mission, vision and purpose. If we aren’t able to grasp the core value to our customers, how will the team align themselves to deliver this expected outcome?
The story I was listening to on NPR was about the famous Lyricist, Sheldon Harnick who composed the words to the musical, “Fiddler On The Roof.” Not only was this movie one of my all time favorites, but the movie takes me back 50 years with the ageless message it delivers. I can still picture my father stomping on the floor, shaking his booty and singing “If I Were A Rich Man.” Harnick was turning 90 and was relaying a story to Terry Gross (Program: Fresh Air). At one of their meetings, the staff was standing around discussing the opening number. Something wasn’t right: the original number was a flurry of people getting ready for the Sabbath and we, the viewers, were looking in on the different villagers to see how they were faring. Harnick recalled the director, Jerry Robbins, asking the question “What is this story all about?” in order to align the opening number to this important question. Well, if you know your musicals, you’ll know that for this musical the core message of the story would center on traditions. They focused on how they evolved, how they impacted their lives and unfortunately for Tevye, how they change. And this epic song, “Tradition” launches the theme that is consistently carried throughout the story.
One word. What was it? Out of curiosity, I started asking new leads, “Why Technology In A Box?” I wanted to know what drew people to our business so that I understood what they were looking for and what we had to live up to. I was pleased with their initial responses, “Responsive, Contagious, Approachable, Relief.” Interesting thought, right? Now, what do I want them to walk away with? I want them to walk away with Trust, Confidence and Peace.
The bottom line is, whatever their initial thoughts were as they were racing through lists of QuickBooks Consultants, they just wanted to find help. It was up to me to exceed those expectations.
