“Don’t wanna be a richer man, just gonna have to be a different man. Time may change me, but I can’t trace time.” – “Changes” David Bowie, 1972
RIP, David Bowie! You were ahead of our time. There was an amazing interview with Bowie asking what he thought about the internet. His answer, “What the internet is going to do to society, both good and bad, is unimaginable.”
I get that. I thought QuickBooks DOS 1.0 was unimaginable. And every year after that, changes are evident. But it’s moving faster and there are volumes of programs that serve the same purpose. I went from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online three years ago and I would never go back. It’s just one of the many online programs that I depend upon. We are told that in our industry each one of us uses on an average 19 apps. When I first heard this I though “No way!”. Then I started making a list and it exceeded that.
The top five apps I use on a regular basis are:
- QuickBooks Online/QuickBooks Online IPhone App: My accounting information is always at my fingertips. I can create invoices, receive payments, run financials 24/7. Rating: AAA
- TSheets: This time tracking software allows my team to track their time on jobs from mobile devices or computer. Rating: Don’t leave home without it! Click HERE for a free 14 day trial
- Evernote: This app is also on my IPhone, Mac, PC and every bit of data that I need at my fingertips is in this app. Think of it as multiple steno books, a box of sticky notes and Excel/Word rolled into one. Information can be tagged and retrieved at a click of a button. Rating: You don’t use it? Are you kidding me?
- Slack: This is similar to Skype, Yahoo Messenger and Windows Messenger. Except you can create Teams (or Projects) and invite those member that must be on the conversation thread. Rating: <3 <3 <3 (LOVE LOVE LOVE, thanks, Seth)
- Zoom: I have been on every different type of web meeting/webinar format imaginable. This is simply the best! It is as easy as sending someone a meeting ID and VOILA, you are all webcamming and chatting together. Rating: My Fav Meeting Place (Bring your own coffee)
There are many more tools that can link me to my clients and keep track of my projects. I have just started using Insightly for my CRM/Project Management. Before that, it was SmartSheets. I use TeamViewer and Remote Desktop to connect to clients all over the country and SmartVault to safeguard and share documents as well as Google Sheets to collaborate on documents. My favorite app of all? Facetime, hands down. It is the only way I can survive having my daughter Sarah in Washington DC and my son Nicolas in Aspen, CO.
Rock on Apple! 🙂
